He designed the Monongahela Incline, the first passenger incline in the United States, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The incline was originally steam powered and ran on wooden tracks.  and his daughter Caroline Endres. Its track was 1600 feet long, and rose to an elevation of 377 feet. It ran from South Twelfth Street at Bardford at its lower end to Warrington Avrnue at its upper end. It was closed on May 25, 1951.
