History

The Mohonasen Central School District was formed in 1959 by the merger of Rotterdam, NY schools including Bradt, Bigsbee, and Carman schools. The name of the newly formed District resulted from a contest among the students with the winning entry created as a combination of the first three letters of the three Indian Tribes that once occupied the area .... MOHawk + ONOndaga + SENeca resulting in MOHONASEN. During the 1960s, Mohonasen, along with Shaker High School, Columbia HS, Schalmont HS, Niskayuna HS, Colonie HS, Shenendehowa HS, Guilderland HS and Bethlehem HS created the Suburban Council. The Suburban Council has changed somewhat over the years and not all the school teams currently participate in every sport in the Suburban Council. Other schools such as Scotia-Glenville, Burnt Hills-Balston Lake and Averill Park now compete in the league as well. In the 1980s Mohonasen and Draper merged and kept the name and campus of Mohonasen. As of today, Schalmont remains as the only other Rotterdam, NY public school district.
