Responsibilities

The academic competitions of which the MHSAA oversees include debate, drama, speech, writing-prose, poetry, short stories, essays and music, both band and choral.

The athletic competitions of which the MHSAA oversees include football, swimming, slowpitch softball, volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, powerlifting, tennis, golf, track, baseball and fastpitch softball. The MHSAA is the only state sanctioning body in the United States which does not sponsor championships in scholastic wrestling

While it strives to include all activities in the state of Mississippi it is primarily focused on sports. One of the main reasons for adding band and choral and the other non sports related activities is financial.
