Balka’s solo exhibitions include those at the National Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan; the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, the Netherlands; the Zacheta Gallery of Contemporary Art, Warsaw; the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (SMAK) in Ghent, Belgium; Dundee Contemporary Arts in Scotland; and the Douglas Hyde Gallery in Dublin, Ireland.

His previous works include a sculpture called 480x10x10 (1990) and an installation called Oasis (C.D.F.) (1989).

In 2009, Balka installed How It Is (2009), the 10th Unilever Series commission for the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern
