She obtained a BA (Hons) in Sociology in 1966 from Leeds University. In 1975 she received a PhD in Economics of Education from the University of London
for her thesis entitled 'Planning Educational Change'. In 1993 Miriam was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts
(RSA), and in 1999 she was Elected Academician of the Academy of Learned Societies in the Social Sciences (AcSS).

, Miriam is responsible for research projects on widening participation and learning within higher education as well as issues around social diversity and difference across all levels of education, including lifelong learning. She is also a supervisor for research students and education doctoral students in The School of Educational Foundations and Policy Studies (EFPS).
Miriam has also been an Executive Editor of the British Journal of Sociology in Education (BSA) and Co-Editor of the Journal of Social Policy and 21st Century Society.
