Design and development

In the mid 1980s, the Omsk OKB started the development of a light 650 hp TV-O-100 engine specifically for the Mi-44. The engine would increase the take-off weight to 1800 kilograms (3,968.3 lb) and allow a maximum speed of up to 260 kilometres per hour (161.6 mph). Studies conducted by Mil

in 1986 to 1987 concluded that the replacement of the Mi-34's original M-14V26 piston engine with the TV-O-100 gas turbine engine would require changing the airframe. The resultant mockup with a new airframe incorporated many changes including the relocation of the fuel tank to the compartment under the gearbox, instead of under the floor like its predecessor, and the stabilizer to the keel beam in the tail.

Early customers of the aircraft demanded that the aircraft be equipped with a two powerplants of about 400 hp each. The most acceptable draft was the TVlD-450 engine, which would generally make the aircraft more agile in flight. In 1988, Mil proposed a draft Mi-44 with two 450 hp TVlD-450 engines. The design has undergone some minor changes compared with the prototype. The engine fit-up is still being disputed and the project is still underway.
