As a player, Herrera made his first debut with Querétaro FC

 in 1990. Then he moved to Atlante FC in 1991, where he would remain until 1995. He was then sold to the now defunct team Toros Neza

 with a total score of 7-2. In 1999, Herrera returned to Atlante for one more year before he would retire and pursue being a coach. He now has a prime time showtime position with the a coaching job that has skeptics on the lookout.

Coaching career

In 2002, only two years after retiring, Herrera came back to coach his old team Atlante. He coached for two years, but resigned after failing to take Atlante to a final. Starting the next season in the Apertura 2004 season, Herrera once again came back, but to coach CF Monterrey. He ironically ended up facing his ex-team Atlante in the semifinals, in where he defeated them in a global score of 7-3. He ultimately failed to make Monterrey champions where they lost to Pumas UNAM in the final with a global score of 3-1. He succeeded in taking Monterrey to another final in the Apertura 2005 season, where he failed once more to Toluca with a global score of 6-3. Herrera would continue to be Monterrey's coach until the Apertura 2007 season where his contract was terminated due to the continuous poor performances the team had made. In the Clausura 2008 season, Herrera was hired as coach for CD Veracruz
