Midwest Millions is a scratchcard
game that debuted on September 7, 2007 in Iowa
and Kansas
. It originally became available in Kansas
at the State Fair
in Hutchinson
and then became available throughout Kansas on September 13, 2007. It was the nation's first multi-jurisdictional scratch game
since the Powerball
scratch ticket in the early 2000s. In 2007, it was announced that other Midwest states may be added in a future edition. Iowa and Kansas are members of the Multi-State Lottery Association
(MUSL), best known for Powerball
. MUSL also administered this instant game.
The drawing had its first run in September of 2007. A total of 1.2 million tickets were offered, with 600,000 being sold in each of the two states. The two largest prizes, each worth $500,000, were in second-chance drawings. The first drawing was held in January 2008 in Topeka, Kansas
; The winning tickets drawn in both second-chance drawings $500,000 were bought in Iowa, although one of the winners was from Nebraska
. Due to the success of the first series, another version was announced to start in April 2008
