The Michigan State Historic Preservation Office is in charge of the listing of historic resources of local, state, and national interest in the U.S. state
of Michigan
, including buildings, lighthouses, bridges, historic districts, and many other properties deemed important to the history of Michigan. The office is administered by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.
The office runs similarly to the National Register of Historic Places
, and properties eligible for inclusion on the state register follow a similar criteria. Properties listed by the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office are known as Michigan State Historic Sites. These sites are not necessarily included on the National Register and vice versa. For example, Woodland Cemetery
is recognized on the state level but not nationally, and the North Maumee Bay Archeological District
is recognized nationally but not on the state level. There are currently over 3,500 Michigan State Historic Sites, while Michigan has just over 1,700 listings on the National Register.
The agency was established with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966
