Michael Rae was born and raised in Hartlepool
, and was brought through the team's Youth Academy, playing regular games for the Youth Team and Reserves. He is known for his determination and good striking capabilities and although still untested at senior level, may be set to make a first-team debut at the club. He earned his first professional contract during the summer of 2006 under manager Danny Wilson. Rae was given a contract extension in the summer of 2007 after the club activated an option in his contract.
