Memorial Heroes of Chernobyl was an almost entirely faked chess
tournament held in April 2005. The organizers apparently ran out of money, and some of the supposed participants had never even heard of the tournament. It is possible that some games were actually played, and that the event was held to enhance ratings or award titles. Because of this event the FIDE has announced stiff penalties for future faked events.
