with a total area of 238.1 km² and a total population of 9,579 inhabitants (2006).
The municipality is composed of 18 parishes, and is located in the district of Viana do Castelo
. It is the northernmost municipality in Portugal.
The present Mayor is António Rui Esteves Solheiro, elected by the Socialist Party
.
The municipal holiday is Ascension Day.
