Mekelle Institute of Technology(MIT)'s mission is to provide high quality education, training and research in the areas of science and technology to produce qualified professionals that can apply their knowledge and skills in the country's development.

EFFORT is the main funding body of Mekelle Institute of Technology. MIT also gets funds from research and development branch of the its ICT department. This branch takes software and hardware projects and develops them for customers and gets some fund in return.ref>Mekelle Institute of Technology website The MIT has also been able to create linkages with some universities and colleges in the United States of America, which have provided manpower and material support to MIT. The institute is governed by a provisional governing board.

MIT graduated its first batch of 142 students 7 July 2007. Currently the campus is teaching around 300 students attending in Engineering faculty.
