Meek Mill's exposure to rap music came early in life via his Uncle, Grand Master Nell a former top DJ from South Philadelphia, who along with other family members, (Ronnie Ron, Chris P, Lazer Bay, Silver, Robbie B, Caesar [RIP], and Bubby B, among others, formed the #1 1980's underground hip-hop crew, "Grand Master Nell and The Punk Funk Nation".
In 2008, After Meek's release from prison on bail, for an alleged offence involving drawing a weapon on two police officers, he released his tenth mixtape, Flamerz', which included the single "In My Bag".
He released Flamerz 2 –"Hottest In The City" in 2009. He was offered record deals with Warner Bros. Records
and with Grand Hustle Records
, but not long after signing with Grand Hustle Records
he was convicted on the prior charges and ordered to serve time in jail.
In March 2011, Meek Mill was named one of the top "Freshman of 2011" by XXL
magazine, where he was awarded the title "Most Street".
