Medicare Rights Center
Encyclopedia
The Medicare Rights Center (Medicare Rights) is a national, 501(c)(3) nonprofit consumer service organization with offices in New York City and Washington, DC. The mission of Medicare Rights is “to ensure access to affordable health care for older adults and people with disabilities through counseling and advocacy, educational programs and public policy initiatives.”

Funding

As an independent organization, Medicare Rights receives funding from private foundations, government agencies, corporations and individuals.

Services

Counseling and Advocacy

Through a national telephone helpline, Medicare Rights provides free Medicare counseling. Callers can receive immediate help addressing problems related to, for example, affording prescription drugs, the Medicare appeals process, or understanding Medicare basics. The organization also helps eligible callers enroll in public benefits that help them afford Medicare-related costs.

Educational Programs

The Medicare Rights Center offers a variety of in-person, online, and recorded trainings and presentations to professionals and consumers throughout the country. Through one of its programs, Seniors Out Speaking (SOS), older volunteers conduct brief monthly presentations on Medicare topics for peers in their community. Medicare Rights also provides educational resources like MedicareInteractive.org, a website that presents Medicare information in searchable and consumer-friendly language.

Public Policy Initiatives

Medicare Rights’ policy work addresses Medicare consumer issues and concerns on both the state and national levels. Medicare Rights develops letters to Congress, fact sheets, reports, and testimony related to Medicare issues.
