The county was formed in 1916 from parts of Edgefield, Abbeville, and Greenwood counties.

In the county, the population was spread out with 19.50% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 28.10% from 45 to 64, and 16.50% who were 65 years of age or older.
