Enrollment

The school opened with an initial enrollment of 100 students — 75 freshmen and 25 sophomores. In subsequent years, the incoming class numbered approximately 100.

Any student in the Chesterfield County schools is eligible to apply. Applying students must submit two teacher recommendations: one from either their middle school mathematics or science teacher and one from another academic teacher. They must submit an application and take a special entrance test covering math, science, writing, and reading comprehension.

Courses

Contrary to the school's title, it offers many classes in all subjects, not just mathematics and science. When students become juniors and seniors, they choose whether or not to take advanced courses in every subject including mathematics and science.

Students have easy access to AP courses (including Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, AB and BC calculus, European History, Literature, Music Theory, U.S. History, U.S. Government, Statistics, Latin), as well as John Tyler
