Material efficiency is a description or metric
Metric (mathematics)
In mathematics, a metric or distance function is a function which defines a distance between elements of a set. A set with a metric is called a metric space. A metric induces a topology on a set but not all topologies can be generated by a metric...

which expresses the degree in which usage of raw materials, construction projects or physical processes are used or carried out in a manner which consumes, incorporates, or wastes less of a given material compared to previous measures. Making a usable item out of thinner stock than a prior version increases the material efficiency of the manufacturing process.

The term Material efficiency can also signify the degree in which a material can handle a particular load, strain or weight upon it.
