Matt became a key member of Salford’s successful 2008 squad, claiming 23 tries in 32 games, Mat was snapped up by Harlequins RL for the 2009 Super League season. Quins coach Brian McDermott stated "He and few others have made a decision to give it a go in London and we are looking forward to working with him."

For the last two seasons, Gardner has been a regular with Widnes Vikings and made 23 appearances last season, scoring three tries.
