, respectively. The state highway in Maryland was constructed in the mid 1920s and later designated MD 278. MD 896 received its present number when the number of PA 896 was extended southeast into Maryland and Delaware in the early 1940s.

Route description

MD 896 begins at the Delaware state line; DE 896 continues southeast from the border toward Newark. The state highway is a two-lane road with a speed limit of 45 mph (72.4 km/h). MD 896 heads northwest toward its only intersection, with Little Egypt Road. The state highway curves north and enters Pennsylvania, where the highway continues as PA 896 toward Strickersville.

History

MD 896 was constructed in 1925 as Maryland's very short portion of the highway between Newark and the Lincoln Highway
