In 1984, he won the AAA 400m hurdles title and was selected for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Three years later he competed in the same event at the world championships in Rome. In 1992, he moved to South Africa to be the athletics and Olympics correspondent for the Johannesburg Sunday Times. He later became a talkshow host on radio station Capetalk in Cape Town. In 2003, he returned to England, where he presented the overnight show on talkSPORT radio at weekends for a period. More recently, he has worked on BBC Radio Five Live presenting sports bulletins.

Martin currently lives in Nottingham with his wife, Linda.
