Martin Forkel started his career with his local side, Viktoria DJK Coburg. There he remained for eight years, the longest he's ever been at a club. In 1994, Forkel was sold to VfB Coburg, again, in his hometown. He was at VfB for considerably less time than he was at Viktoria for, just the one season in total.
