History

Although Marseille XIII Avenir are a relatively new club, borne out of the ashes of the previous club that competed in Elite 2 but who went bust in 2006, the sport of Rugby League has a long though chequered history in this Mediterranean city. The original club was founded in 1946 and enjoyed early success in both the League and the Cup.

After a number of years outside the elite of French Rugby League the club regained its place in the top division courtesy of a 12-10 victory over Carpentras in the 2005 Elite 2 Final. However, the following season, 2005/06, proved to be the original club's last as mounting financial problems led to them folding before the season was out.
