Manningtree railway station
Encyclopedia
Manningtree is a railway station which serves the town of Manningtree
in Essex
, England
. Services are provided by National Express East Anglia. The station is on the Great Eastern Main Line
between London and Norwich
and is the only station on the main line between Colchester
and Ipswich
. Manningtree is a junction station for the important branch to Harwich
, known as the Mayflower Line
. Almost all of the services between Manningtree and Harwich run only the length of the Mayflower Line, but a few are through services to and from London. Some of these are boat trains (timed to connect with sailings) which run between London and Harwich International, not all the way to Harwich Town.
The station was originally opened by the Eastern Union Railway
in 1846 but rebuilt by the Great Eastern Railway
in 1899-1901 when the present main building was designed by W.N. Ashbee.
Immediately east of the station there is a triangle of junctions, known as Manningtree South, North and East junctions. The main line and the branch connection from London are double track, but the north to east curve connecting Ipswich with Harwich is single track. All three sides of the triangle are electrified.
A second interesting feature just east of the station is a combination of a road underpass and a level crossing. The underpass has limited height and the parallel level crossing is needed to permit higher vehicles to cross the railway.
The station has (on the westbound platform) a manned booking office and a self-service ticket machine. There is a 'side' gate west of the station building for use outside office hours and a PERTIS self-service ticket machine is available here. There is also a station buffet at the eastern end of the station building.
