 and Salford to form a ring. It was completed in 2004 with the opening of a final extension to Trinity Way.

A major component of the ring is the Mancunian Way

 Motorway which lies to the south of Manchester city centre. When the Mancunian way was completed, it was planned that it would be the first of many inner-city elevated roads. This route is a pivotal part of today's ring road for east-west traffic across the southern part of the city centre. As most other major routes through Manchester city centre hadn't changed in years it was decided that a ring road was to be built.

The principal section of Trinity Way opened in 1987 easing congestion on Deansgate and opening a vital route just North West of the city centre. Improvements were made to Great Ancoats Street (just North-East of the city centre) which is now mostly dual carriageway.

As Great Ancoats Street (to the north and east), Trinity Way (to the north and west) and the Mancunian Way (to the south) almost formed a complete circle it was decided that the circle was to be completed. The major "gap" was in the south-west of Manchester City Centre

 and the end of Trinity Way at Salford Central railway station

. The route was finally completed on Monday, 29 November 2004.
