on 11 May 1997. They were boycotted by the main opposition parties, and as a result featured only two candidates; incumbent president Alpha Oumar Konaré
of the Alliance for Democracy in Mali
and Mamadou dit Maribatrou Diaby of the Party for Unity, Democracy and Progress. The result was a victory for Konaré, who won 84.4% of the vote, although turnout was just 29.0%.
