Major Iqbal is a Pakistani national who has been indicted in United States district court
in Chicago
on April 25, 2011 as an alleged conspirator in 2008 Mumbai attacks
. Iqbal occasionally went by the name of Chaudhery Khan. The trial started at a time when U.S. relations with Pakistan were strained after death of Osama bin Laden
. The prosecution alleged that Iqbal had provided Lashkar-e-Taiba
(LeT) operative David Headley
with US $ 25,000 in July 2006 for conducting surveillance trips of Mumbai for LeT to identify potential targets. The chargesheet does not name Iqbals Inter-Services Intelligence
(ISI) affiliation though this has been detailed in both US and Indian case files. His name was included in a list of 50 most wanted fugitives based in Pakistan released by Government of India
which claims that he is a serving officer of ISI. Iqbal allegedly was the main handler of Headley. He was involved in recruiting, training and directing him.
