Luis Arenal had two siblings, a brother named Leopoldo, and a sister named Angélica, the later wife of David Alfaro Siqueiros

. In 1930 he started painting. Together with other notable painters, he painted the mural "La America Tropical" at the Chouinard School of Art in Los Angeles
