Originating from the idea of raising a dedicated point of interest for the gaming world, strongly related to the comics industry in the aspects of customers and contents, straight from the beginning Lucca Games sported activities ranging beyond the mere commercial aspects of a convention, focused on attracting customers for the convention itself as well as for the commercial exhibitors.

Year after year, while still focusing of a market-oriented convention, more and more non-commercial activities have been progressively introduced, such as tournaments, exhibitions and meetings directly patronized by the Lucca Games staff.
The original first batch of activities was formed by the Game Mastering Tournament, the Grog Trophy for miniature painting and the Best home-made game contest, alongside as the Best of Show prize for the best commercial game of the year.
This original group of contests was at first expanded in 1995, with the addition of Giochi di Ruolo Senza Frontiere, Italian team championship of Role Playing Games, that still continues takes place in Lucca Games under the name of Ruolimpiadi.
1998 has seen the birth of Lucca Games’ Performance Area, a place were the artist guest of the convention exhibits in live painting performance for the attenders.
By year 2000 another dedicated area is introduced: independence bay, focused on home-made games realized by enthusiasts, that in these way have an opportunity of being presented at the most numerous audience possible. Two years later, in 2002, New Kit Generation was added, a contest of modelling for kits inspired by game, comics, and generic science-fiction and fantasy settings. With the change of location of 2006, a whole new pavillon is christened: The Citadel, dedicated to Live-Action RPG and costume art.
Last addiction are Lucca Games Educational and the prototype review corner, both launched in 2008. The first containing all the workshops and educational-oriented events of the convention, the second allowing amateur game designers to present their prototype to professional game designer and publishers for evaluation.

Since the beginning, Lucca Games has seen up to now a steady increase in exhibition space, visitors attendance and, by consequence, business growth. This led to acquiring a paritary position with Lucca Comics. In 2000, the official name of the Convention held in every tear in Lucca at the end of October was changed to Lucca Comics&Games, formalizing the substantial equity in standing for the two strictly related components of the event.

A significant turning point in the whole Lucca Comics&Games history is represented by year 2006, when the whole convention left the structures of the small civic exhibition centre and transferred inside the old town renaissance walls. A comeback for Lucca Comics, held there form its beginning back in the sixties until the early eighties, but an absolute debut for Lucca Games, located in a giant monobloc tent-structure of 9500 square meters right outside the city walls. Despite the obvious logistic and organizational difficulties of such a change, the choice proved to be the right one, with a significant increment of visitors.

Lucca Games’ more recent editions are every year focused around a central theme, acting as inspiration for most of the convention events. The two last editions, 2008 and 2007, were focused on the Magic: The Gathering

Every year, Lucca Games hosts a significant number of Italian and international guests, coming form the gaming industry, such as game designers and publishers, but also from related cultural areas, as fantasy and science-fiction art and literature are. With meetings, workshops and exhibitions, Lucca Games guests participate in the effort of creating an all-round cultural convention.

Dealers and Exhibitors

Due to its prominent position in the Italian gaming culture, Lucca Games represents a real focal point for the Italian market, as well for country’s gaming industry. But, also, it sports a great point of interest for every sector related to the gaming culture as it is.
Because of this, not all the convention’s exhibitors are strictly part of the game industry, with a huge number coming form other areas related to gaming, fantasy and science-fiction culture.
Lucca Games exhibitors can be approximately divided in four categories:

Game companies, game designers and publishers: the core business of Lucca Games, with their booths usually representing major attraction for the attenders. Their presence at the convention is essentially market-oriented, with activities like presentations of latest products and direct-selling to the public. Publishing companies are also present, presenting and selling their fantasy, science-fiction, horror and related catalogs.
The most recent editions have seen the debut of video gaming industry at Lucca Games;

Game shops and retailers: even not representing (o at last doing so only in a small scale) real game companies, they represents the most numerous exhibitors, their stands being real game shops selling directly to the public. Often, they offer a wider range of products, ranging from models to merchandising, although still related with the cartoon-game world;

Gaming associations and independent game press: organized gaming enthusiasts take the opportunity to show to the widest audience possible their activities and ideas, or use the convention for establishing and maintain contacts with professionals (often both). Lucca Games, due to its relevancy countrywide, is a significant moment for the whole Italian gaming club web. Many associations organize big gaming events to be held in Lucca Games, often with direct contribution form the convention, with the objectives of gaining visibility and attract gamers to their area of interest;

Artists and craft makers: fantasy painters and illustrators, artisans recreating middle-age weapons and equipment, but also computer graphic artists and cinema and TV props and costumes makers. Even though not directly related to the world of gaming, Lucca Games visitors represent a great potential market for those realities.

Events

Aside from exhibitors, every year Lucca Games directly organizes and hosts a range of events related to the world of gaming, such as tournaments, prizes, concourses and workshops.

The Best of Show is an annual prize for the top-notch product of the gaming industry. It is assigned by a commission to the best game presented by game companies in four categories: best Role-playing Game, best Collectible Game, best Card Game, best Tabletop Game.
The Best of Show concourse has become a "de facto" showroom of the products the game companies chose to launch and promote every year, and benefits from a notable significance in the Italian games enthusiast community. The winning games of every edition can have a dedicated logo included on their box cover.

While Best of Show has an essentially commercial target, the Best fan Game prize is dedicated on independent and amateur game designers. The prize consist in sponsorship for the publishing of the game by the Italian game company Da Vinci Games

, with Lucca games involved in its distribution.

The Grog Trophy for miniature painting is focused on the art of painting game miniatures, from all games and miniature makers. The inscribed models range every year in the order of hundreds, organized in various categories. Year after year, it gained a country-wide reputation for Italian miniature painters.

New Kit Generation - Lucca Model Contest is, on the other hand, a prize focused on the general modeling, however focused on science-fiction and fantastic settings. Patronized by the New Kit Generation Community association, it is called for and sponsored by Lucca's municipality government. Aside for the competitive aspect, NKG also sports a wide exhibit hall for the huge number of models inscribed every year, shown to visitors for the purpose of popular vote.

The Game Master Tournament, dedicated to Role-Playing Games enthusiasts, is one of the oldest events in Lucca Games, existing since the early editions. Every Game Master (or Dungeon Master, or Keeper...) can participate by having a game session during the convention, and inscribing himself at the gaming area desk. The GMs are evaluated via questions asked to the players after the end of the game session.

The Ruolimpiadi are another country-sized Role-Playing Games event, held every year in Lucca Games and directly organized by the convention staff.
Starting in 1995 as Giochi di Ruolo Senza Frontiere, the Ruolimpiadi are the Italian team championship for Role-Playing and narrative Games.
For all the duration of Lucca Games, gaming teams coming from all Italy organize their own gaming session, with participants from the other teams.
Year after year, the Ruolimpiadi gained a status of annual meeting for RPG enthusiasts from all country, with now historical and vastly honoured teams confronting every year among them as well as with new teams.

Lucca Games Educational is the convention's dedicated space for specialized cultural activities such as seminars and workshops. Mainly intended towards professional attenders, it coordinates such activities in a definite program, and grants a dedicated location separated from the convention hall, guaranteeing a more calm and relaxed setting.
The meetings ave a maximum amount of attenders, and participants have to inscribe before the beginning Lucca Games, allowing for a curriculum-based selection of attenders. Participants ar awarded dedicated certificates of participation.

The Prototype Review Corner is an appointment-based activity, in which amateur game designers can arrange a meeting with professionals game designers or editors, both Italian and international, in order to show them a working prototype of their self-designed game. There is no granted commercial result in doing this, but it's surely useful to hear comments, proposals (and critics also), from people that benefit of an internal point-of-view on the gaming industry.

Guests

Since its early editions, Lucca Games sports a notable presence of guest coming from the gaming industry and related areas, such as fantasy art and literature. The convention choose to stress on the point that gaming is an all-round cultural phenomenon, and by the use of guests the convention offer in cultural activities has increased every year.
Every edition of Lucca Games hosts a numerous representative of Italian, European and international guests: their presence is part of the non-commercial activities carnet of the convention, and is dedicated at promoting cultural aspects of gaming.

A well-extabilished tradition, every year Lucca Games hosts three guests of honor, one for each of three categories of people: game designers and publishers, graphic artist and painters, writers and screenwriters of fantasy/science fiction/horror genre. The invitation of these guests is generally planned to contribute creating the current edition recurring theme.

Aside the guests of honor, every edition sports a variable, but ever-expanding number of special guests, ranging from every corner of the gaming culture: new authors and designers, illustrators, gaming miniatures sculptors and painters, famous gamers and game experts.

There are eight general categories for the activities a guest usually takes part at Lucca Games:

Exhibitions: stands that show to the public a collection of related items such games, arts and written materials, usually celebrating anniversaries or marking a notable career;

Public meetings: announcing new products, or with the audience about a remarkable guest opera, such as a famous best-selling game, for example;

Public performance: graphical artist perform sessions of live painting in the dedicated performance area, confronting with the attenders;

Lessons and workshops: educational events, in which the guest assumes the position of a teacher and confronts with participants on a determined matter;

Prototype review: amateurs that designed their own working game prototype can show it to game designers and publishers for evaluation;

Questions & Answers meetings: public conferences in which the audience confronts with the guest for better comprehension of her/his activities and works;

Interviews: mainly for international guests, their presence at Lucca Games is usually an occasion for being interviewed by gaming-related press;

Autograph sessions: rather classical events, in which enthusiasts and supporters can have items (books, games, pictures etc.) autographed by the guest.

All guests activities in Lucca Games are organized in a program for the convention days, and open for participation to every visitor. Exceptions to this rule are the workshops and the prototype review, activities for which booking is necessary and a preliminary selection of participants is made by the staff. Participation for all activities is comprised in the cost of Lucca Comics&Games entrance ticket.

The latest editions of the convention, due to the large boost in visitors number, have also sported exibhitor-related guests, invited and hosted by gaming companies as a mean of gaining visibility for their commercial activities. These virtuous additions allowed to further expand the cultural offer of exhibitions, meetings and workshop for visitors.
