Alice gets into fifth grade. During the book, her cat Oatmeal dies because of a heart problem. Alice is really angry at God because he didn't save her cat's life. Later in the book, her friend Sara disappears. At first, Alice is very worried that Sara was kidnapped or something, but then she finds out that at Sara moved to her grandmother into another town. Also, Alice's best friend, Rosalind, tells her that she's having her period. She is angry, because Alice isn't happy for her. But the reason is that Alice doesn't know, what "having your period means. When she asks her brother Les, but he thinks Alice is asking about the mathematical period. Still, somehow Alice manages to find out. She also has sex education at school, which causes shocks.
Even though everything seems solved, at the end of the book, Alice has got to move a few miles from Takoma Park to Silver Spring.
And when she wants to tell Rosalind goodbye, Alice finds out that Rosalind is on holidays in Wisconsin.
