Route description

From the west, LA 4 begins at an intersection with U.S. Highway 71 in northern Red River Parish and runs eastward along the Red River Parish line. It then turns to the northeast, where it enters Ringgold and intersects U.S. Highway 371. LA 4 the continues eastward through Bienville Parish, running through the towns of Castor and Lucky. In Lucky, LA 4 also intersects LA 9. In Jackson Parish, LA 4 intersects U.S. Highway 167 in Jonesboro. While in Jackson Parish, LA 4 runs through Chatham.

In Caldwell Parish, LA 4 turns southeastward and merges with U.S. Highway 165 between Grayson and Columbia. LA 4 splits with U.S. 165 just north of Columbia and then continues eastward into Franklin Parish. LA 4 then turns northeastward, where it intersects with LA 865 and LA 17 in Winnsboro. LA 4 then continues almost due east through Tensas Parish and intersects U.S. Highway 65. After a few miles, LA 4 runs through Newellton and ends at an intersection with LA 605.
