and is produced by Dr. Dre
and Mark Batson
. The song is composed by S. Carter, D. Parker, C. Payne, M. Batson, and A. Young.
Dr. Dre also told Scratch magazine in a 2004 interview that he has been studying piano and music theory to create this song.
The first verse is rumored to be about Jaz-O
, his former mentor and business partner, but is also speculated as being about long-time friend, business partner, and co-founder of Roc-a-fella Records
Damon Dash
(though this theory lacks lyrical basis). In the song Jay-Z states, "I heard motherfuckers saying they made Hov; made Hov say, 'OK, so, make another Hov.'" Hov refers to Carter's previous stage name Young Hov and the lyrics parallel the history between him and Jaz-O.
The second verse could be about either (or both) Beyoncé or/and Rosario Dawson
. The opening lyric, "I don't think it's meant to be, be," is very arguably addressed to Beyoncé. At the same time, Carter dated Dawson from 2000 until 2002, breaking up when Dawson was 23, coinciding with the lyric "and honestly, at 23, I would probably love my work more than I did she." It's also important to note that the One he Lost was Dawson, not Beyoncé.
The third verse is about his nephew, Colleek D. Luckie, who died in a car accident with the car, a Chrysler 300
, that Jay-Z bought him for his graduation present.
He also mentions Colleeks' Girlfriend was pregnant when he died, Jay-Z personally blames his nephews death on himself.
Jay-Z makes a reference to the film "Casino"
with the line: "Should've stayed in food n' beverege/ too much flossing/ too much Sam Rothstein." Jay-Z can be seen driving Jackson’s
$8 million Maybach Exelero
in the video.
