Pupils studying at local Roman Catholic partnership schools are guaranteed a place at Loreto if they wish to go. Next priority is given to students in Roman Catholic Schools who are not in partnership with Loreto and then the local CofE

 school. Priority is then falls to Roman Catholic pupils at non-RC schools and then any other pupils who wish to apply to Loreto.

Prospective students must also meet GCSE entry requirements to study AS Level or BTEC Qualifications.

Foundation

Loreto College was founded in 1851 by the Loreto Sisters

, who were called upon to help overcome the challenges faced in Manchester, which had not yet been recognized as a city, by Irish immigrants who had fled poverty and famine.

Sixth form college

In 1977 it became a co-educational STATE LEA-controlled sixth form college, called Loreto Sixth Form College. Manchester LEA's state schools had earlier become comprehensive in 1967. On 1 April 1993, like all sixth-form colleges, it left Manchester LEA, and became funded like FE colleges via the Further Education Funding Council for England
