. At that time, the gateman would ring a warning bell and close the gates when the bridge was clear before the watchman ordered the lift. The process failed while a relief watchman was on duty. The bus was near the edge of the south bascule when it started to rise; driver Albert Gunter made a split-second decision to accelerate the bus, clearing a six-foot drop onto the north bascule, which had not started to rise. The conductor broke his leg, and twelve of the twenty passengers aboard received minor injuries. The driver was later rewarded with a £10 bonus.
Before the last millennium, the service covered East Dulwich
stopping at the Dulwich Library/Dulwich Plough stop.
The service is operated by single decker buses, but due to ongoing issues with overcrowding, Arriva will be using 16 double-decker buses on the route from November 2010. Despite unconfirmed reports from drivers suggesting the route may be shortened and terminate at Peckham Rye instead of Nunhead (to avoid the railway bridge on Evelina Road), Transport for London have confirmed that there will be no changes to the structure of the route.
On the 16 October 2010, the 78 was transferred to Ash Grove Garage.
On 17 April 2011, Alexander Dennis Enviro 400
(T) from 38 were introduced on the 78.
