) which closed in 1993. The route was extended to Norwood Junction in 1951 for daily service (by that time the route also had been running on Saturdays). An additional Sunday service was added, running on the new Waterloo - Norwood Junction section completely replacing the 68A. In 1958, the Sunday service ceased because the 40 had been partly extended from Camberwell Green to Norwood Junction. 1971 saw the Tufnell Park to Euston section replaced by the 239. On the 5 January 1974, the 196 experienced massive cutback to Brixton

Ownership

In 1987, the contract for the 196 was awarded to Cityrama and two years later to London & Country. Due to poor management of the company, however, London General were next to hold the contract in 1990. They were reassigned to the contract in 1997, when they favoured the use of Leyland Titan buses
