Prior to entering parliament in 2010 he was a member of the Central Provincial Council.

In May 1997, Lohan Ratwatte was implicated in the shooting death of Papua New Guinean Rugby player Joel Pera but was subsequently released as insufficient witnesses came forward to provide evidence.

In 2001, during local elections, Lohan was again implicated in the shooting deaths of 10 Sri Lanka Muslim congress supporters. He was again exonerated by courts for lack of evidence.
