In August 1868, a contract was awarded by the Linn County Commissioners to Bishop & Eaton for a bridge across Locust Creek. The bridge was not to exceed $5,000 in cost and would become a vital link in east - west traffic in northern Missouri. It also runs parallel to the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad
. The bridge is a Howe truss. The bridge is raised above the surrounding ground level and sloped ramps approach the bridge from each end. The bridge at 151 feet (46 m)is the longest remaining covered bridge
