It opened its doors to pupils on 6 January 1843. The Institution was a day school for boys, sons of middle class
Liverpudlians, and aimed to provide them with a suitable education encompassing instruction in the sciences, commerce and religion. The second verse of the school song (in Latin) began Intellect spurs us on, manliness inspires us.
Its impressive red sandstone building was designed by Harvey Lonsdale Elmes

The School is now Liverpool College, which moved away from the city centre during World War II
. The old Liverpool Collegiate Institution continued on as a grammar, and then a comprehensive school. In 1985 the school underwent an amalgamation with Breckfield community comprehensive school, where it was wound down year on year, until in 1987, there was only one year of pupils left in occupancy. On the morning of June 12th 1987 the last pupil, one Richard John Bradshaw, left the building, followed by the care taker. The main front doors were then locked behind the duo and the building ceased to exist as a functioning school. The building has now been renovated, after a long period of dereliction, into a series of luxury apartments by Urban Splash
