History

In 1971, Jack Hardy purchased the property known as the Barnard Farm from Lou Cocchiaro. Lou loved airplanes and wanted a runway built but did not have the resources to build one. Lou had a small grass strip on the farm, but it was not long enough to allow very many general aviation airplanes to land there. Jack also loved airplanes, and upon buying the property from Lou, built a paved, lighted runway.

At one time this airport was busy and served Southern Maine and Seacoast New Hampshire. Jack, and his wife Jean, operated the airport, which had a very busy flight school, a maintenance facility and several charter companies. Both worked very hard at the airport.

Over the years, the runway was improved and repaved. Instrument approaches were added which cost over $30,000 as the property had to be surveyed. All of this was done without any federal, state , or local funding.

In November 2000, Jack died as a result of prostate cancer. His wife Jean, eventually sold the property to a local developer who defaulted on his loan. The property was sold at an auction and Sweet Peas LLC purchased the property.

Today, Sweet Peas owns and operates the airport.
