The district is organized into 11 regional offices, nine of which handle geographic regions (Central City, Central East, East, North, Northeast, Northwest, South, Southwest and West) plus Alternative Education Region covering all the District's Disciplinary and Accelerated Schools and the High School Region covering many of the District's high schools.

The city is also home to 55 charter schools, which are not part of the school district: 29 elementary schools, 6 middle schools, 16 high schools, and four special schools.
