Lyner is an energetic teenager and the main character of the game. He was born in Platina, a city situated on the mid-upper level of the tower. Fathered by the governor of Platina, Lyner has access to the local government and he is granted access to the majority of the Tower (he's also adept in the Hymmnos language). However, instead of following in his father's footsteps, he joined the Knights of Elemia. Because of his natural-born talent, he was quickly promoted to the Knights of Elemia and protects the city with Shurelia. He is often reckless and impulsive, much in line with the archetypal young hero, wanting to save everyone whether he's risking his life or not.

Aurica is a a 3rd generation Reyvateil. Because of her birth circumstances, she is classified as a Class-D Reyvateil, the lowest rank. Before the present time in the game, her home, Skuwat Village, was inflitrated by the Tenba Conglomorate. The Teru Tribe attacked Tenba while they were camped in Skuwat Village and the ensuing battle destroyed the town. Her parents went missing during the raid and she was later told that they died. However, she did not see their bodies firsthand, causing her serious mental trauma. Afterwards, she joins the Church of Elemia to work as a Reyvateil, in hopes of becoming one of the Holy Maidens. She appears inferior and gloomy at first but is getting more cheerful after met with Lyner. She is close friends with Claire, a singer in Nemo who also her childhood friend. She has a very strange way of cooking, though the food she makes always ends up tasting really good, while being almost obscene in appearance. Her dream is to open a music box shop.

Misha is a β pure-blood Reyvateil, also known to the Teru Tribe as the Hoshiyomi or Star Singer Her main purpose in life is to sing the song Chronicle Key to suppress Mir. She has been friends with Lyner since their childhood in Platina. He doesn't remember about her at first, though. She is also a good cook. She seems dispassionate, composed, but sometimes childish. Misha is quite bold and doesn't hesistate to make moves on Lyner. She suffers from acrophobia

Shurelia is the administrator of Platina and the leader of the Knights of Elemia. As her direct subordinate, Lyner both admires and respects her. Although it is well-known that she is a Reyvateil, and a very powerful one at that, the identity of her Reyvateil type is left as a mystery for most of the game. It is only revealed partway through Phase 3 that she is in fact a Reyvateil Origin and in terms of sheer power, is second only to Mir. Though, she looks cold at first, Shurelia is actually shy and quite clumsy (sometimes she trips and lands with her face while chanting spells). She has no sense of direction and often gets lost, even in her own tower. She has a great fondness for bunnies and their related stuff (from dolls to bunny-shaped food to the point of bombs and restoring items). Aurica had once mistaken her for a robot because of her Linkage costume. Tough, extremely serious and no-nonsense as her role demands, she reveals herself to be desperate in gaining some sort of freedom and have a more ordinary, enjoyable life. She is the creator of Grathmelding, and has vast knowledge about technology. Her true name is Eoria/Eolia.

Jack is a wandering gunman and is the first person Lyner meets in the Lower World. At first he is a mysterious character who never reveals his true intentions, however as gameplay continues more about him is discovered. His real name is Harmonica and he is a former member of the Teru Tribe, who had been searching for Misha for six years. He and Misha became friends after she had left Platina. Jack's standing in the Teru Tribe is unknown, but he seems to have a deep connection with Flute and Tastiella (he calls Tastiella "Granny", much to her chagrin). Also, he worries a lot about Misha, having taken care of her as a surrogate big brother after she made to the Lower World. He lost one arm and part of his torso during an incident before the beginning of the game, and since then had a mechanical plate and arm to replace them. His arm mounts a multi-barreled gatling gun.

Krusche is a Grathmelder specializing in airship repairs. She also does the repairs for Jack's arm, and has quite the competitive streak, especially around Misha. In her past she had a boyfriend named Luke, who had left in an airship to attempt passing the Blastline. He never returned and afterwards Krusche has been determined since then on getting there herself and seeing if she could find any clues about what happened to him. She is sometimes bold and lacks some softness, and she wields a huge chainsaw in combat. Her ability in engineering is noted by Tenba later in the game, and she is employed as chief engineer.

Radolf is a cardinal in the Elemia Church. Although he joined before Bishop Falss, he remained at cardinal while Falss was promoted. Radolf believes that the Church should be for the people, which opposes the views of the Bishop and puts the two of them at odds on many occasions. He has looked after Aurica for some time. He is also a Reyvatiel supporter, unlike many other characters in the game. Once communications open between Platina and The Wings of Horus he becomes an ambassador for peace.

Ayatane is a Knight of Elemia, and Lyner's best friend. He seems to have great admiration for Shurelia, possibly even romantic feelings for her. He is a sophisticated and gentle pacifist who's constantly smiling as seen throughout the game. Ayatane often speaks to no one in particular, mentioning someone he calls Mother, who is later revealed and clarified deeper in the game. While being male, he has an extremely feminine appearance.

During the Phase 2 of the game, Ayatane performs a strange but special ability that wiped out a virus by merely raising his arm straight forward. Although Lyner and the others questioned him of his power--Radolf specifically--he only says that it was a special occasion, and should be kept unspoken of.

It is later revealed that Ayatane is a virus that was specifically designed by Mir rather than being a simple spawn like the others in the game. His purpose was to get close to Shurelia and later have Mir forced into her to take control, which is found to be successful much later in the game. Ayatane also takes Mei Mei's sister, the Child of Light, and has her attack Lyner and his party. When she was defeated and attempted to finish the group off with a huge amount of energy, Ayatane leaps in the way, admitting that even though he had merely been created to act it out, he truly considered Lyner as a friend, thus having a strong bond that made him feel guilty and regret. After Lyner tells Ayatane that they could save Mir by going against her and convincing her to live with them, he joins the party for the rest of the game.

However, because he was a special creation of Mir's, the latter treats and sees him as her son. This is later clarified when Mir had possessed Ayatane for his betrayal and only summoned a guardian to have a virus control it, knocking him out in the process with a lightning spell rather than deleting him.

Claire is the friend of Aurica. She is a bartender in Airport City Nemo. Claire is a Reyvateil like her friend, but she refuses to use song magic because she does not want to hurt anyone. It is her belief that Song Magic is to be used to help people, not harm them. Claire does still sing though, just Blue Magic, healing spells, and she plays the lute. Claire was also the one that crafted Donsuke (Don Leon) and gave him to Aurica as a present.

Bourd is the antagonist in the beginning of the game. He works for Tenba as their second in command. Bourd is well known for his mistreatment of Reyvateils and thinks of them as swappable, treating them more like objects than people and more than willing to use them for brutal experiments, even without his superior's consent. He also plots with Kyle Clancy (Bishop Falss) to reawaken Mir in Phase 2 after Aurica gains the Hymn Crystal [Linker]. While his demise is not shown during Aurica's path, he attempts to challenge Lyner and the rest of the party in Misha's path, and dies there.

Donsuke is the Mind Guardian for Aurica. He is originally distrusting towards Lyner, but is helpful inside her Cosmosphere. He looks like a stuffed lion with a crimson mantle, and a sword hilt on his hip and a casserole pan on his head. He was given to Aurica as a stuffed animal from Claire, and is later remade by Lyner.

Hama is the Mind Guardian for Misha. She was actually a gift to Misha from Lyner in the form of an ocarina he had crafted by himself, much like how Claire had given Donsuke to Aurica. This is why Hama often acts so infuriated and sarcastic toward Lyner, especially at the start of Misha's Cosmosphere when he does not remember her. Also, she later sacrifices herself in the deeper part of Misha's Cosmosphere to save Lyner from being hurt. Later on, Hama is resurrected when Lyner crafts another ocarina for Misha, again playing the role of being Misha's Mind Guardian. She appears as a very little girl dressed in Japanese robes, and has cat ears on her head.

Spica is a merchant with wide resources and influence in the Ar tonelico world. She is first met in Firefly Alley with Misha and is the best source of grathnode crystals throughout the game. In exchange for rare grathnode crystals she gives a boat load of kitty candies to Lyra for free. According to Lyra, Spica's goal is to become the Queen of the Underworld. However, Spica herself never goes into detail about what she wants. She sells "kitty candy" in Karakola Avenue.

A young and energetic citizen of Em Pheyna. Lyra loves to collect items from all over the world in exchange for rare grathnode crystals, which is how she comes into play during the game. She is also the primary source for Spica's collection of grathnode crystals, and in exchange receives a huge amount of Kitty Candies which she loves to eat. In the game, Lyra reveals that her goal is to make Harmonica (Jack Hamilton) hers'. Throughout the game, you may get Lyra's Tower Report, which may give you tips on defeating bosses or just telling you secrets.

Leard Barsett is Lyner's father and the governor of Platina. He is almost obsessed with convincing that his son changes his knightly ways and instead indulge in politics and constantly gets into arguments with him as a result. He wishes to have Lyner succeed him once he retires, but in the end he sees how well his son has been doing and what good he has done for the entire world and stops his attempts at getting him to follow in his footsteps.

Flute is the chief of the Teru Tribe. He and Harmonica (Jack Hamilton) were good friends, but several years prior to the game they had an argument about the rules of Em Pheyna and the latter walked out in the midst of it.

Tastiella was originally a high priestess of Em Pheyna during the Second Era. According to Shurelia, she sacrificed herself in order to seal Mir. She now acts as the Crescent Chronicle's terminal to oversee the physical world and therefore can only move within Em Pheyna and the Crescent Chronicle proper. Her "body" is severely damaged later in the game, but she manages to oversee the end of Lyner's journey and congratulate him, before bidding farewell and disappearing, thus dying as she wished.

Falss is the leading man of the church, who had been appointed as Bishop for eight years. However, he first appeared and took a position fifteen years ago. Because of his superior knowledge and power in comparison to the other church members, he rose to power quickly.

The reason why Falss has exceeding knowledge on a variety amount of subjects is due to the fact that he hails from Platina. He was one of the administrators of the tower along with Shurelia and Leard--together, they were called the Three Magi. But one day, Falss attempted to make a contract with Mir, the Mother Virus, to use her powers to make progress in the world. During his plan, Shurelia and Leard found him and the former had him banished. Falss faked his leave and soon came back to try again, but the knights of Elemia discovered him, causing him to jump off the tower.

Falss managed to survive the fall and was found by a man who helped him to be healthy again. This was when Falss changed his name to the present one and entered the church, hiding his identity to someday go back to Platina with power that would make him capable of having revenge on both Shurelia and Leard. Until this point, his real name was Kyle Clancy.

However, when he finally got back up during the game by manipulating many people including Lyner and his party, Mir infects him with viruses, claiming that he would have to prove himself worthy to have her serve him. Falss in the end was taken over by the viruses, and is killed by Lyner and his party.

Ayano is the president of the Tenba Conglomerate. She finds the work boring, and would rather spend her time at the bar eating Dokkoi Sets. She isn't great at her desk job, but when it comes to human relations and communication, she is excellent. She takes responsibility for the actions of her company and is ready to correct mistakes and deal with customer dis-satisfaction.

Mir is the source of viruses within Ar tonelico, aka the Mother Virus. She was originally created by humans as a β pure-blood Reyvateil without a will of her own in order to create stronger Song Magic. Because of this fact, her power surpasses even that of Shurelia's. She once loved humans, but circumstances changed her opinion. As her Song Magic grew more powerful, her will grew along with it. Ultimately, she was disillusioned by humans' cruelty, gathered Reyvateils, and waged war against her creators. Because of her immense power, Shurelia could do nothing but seal her with the help of the High Priestess of Em Pheyna, Tastiella. If one finishes the game with a good ending, she will be redeemed. She appears as a playable heroine in Ar Tonelico 2 as Jacqli.
