 crime drama Agatha Christie's Poirot
Agatha Christie's Poirot
Agatha Christie's Poirot is a British television drama that has aired on ITV since 1989. It stars David Suchet as Agatha Christie's fictional detective Hercule Poirot. It was originally made by LWT and is now made by ITV Studios...

. It first aired on 8 January 1989 and all episodes have aired on ITV1
ITV1
ITV1 is a generic brand that is used by twelve franchises of the British ITV Network in the English regions, Wales, southern Scotland , the Isle of Man and the Bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey. The ITV1 brand was introduced by Carlton and Granada in 2001, alongside the regional identities of their...

.

Episodes run for either approximately 50 minutes, or approximately 100 minutes (the latter are marked "feature-length" in the table below). The shorter episodes are based on Christie's short stories featuring Poirot, many published in the 1920s. The TV adaptations were considerably embellished from the original stories' plots and were set in 1936 instead of the 1920s et al. as is shown by the inclusion of actual historical events such as Fred Perry
Fred Perry
Frederick John Perry was a championship-winning English tennis and table tennis player who won 10 Majors including eight Grand Slams and two Pro Slams. Perry won three consecutive Wimbledon Championships between 1934 and 1936 and was World No. 1 four years in a row...

's win at the French Open and the Jarrow March
Jarrow March
The Jarrow March , was an October 1936 protest march against unemployment and extreme poverty suffered in North East England. The 207 marchers travelled from the town of Jarrow to the Palace of Westminster in London, a distance of almost , to lobby Parliament...

.

The longer episodes are based on Christie's novels. The chronology of these episodes differs significantly from that of the novels and, as with the shorter episodes, some stories whose book versions were set in other decades are moved to the 1930s. Of these filmed versions, the one inconsistency is "The Mysterious Affair at Styles". This episode (which was Christie's first Poirot novel), was taken out of the previously established time-line that the series had created and was set back in 1917. It deals with Poirot's first mystery in England and his reacquaintance with Hastings (injured during the war) and Inspector Japp. In this episode a significant effort was made to make the actors appear at least 10 years younger by using more make-up and darker hair. After this, all episodes returned to the previously established time-line.
