The publisher house, originally named Société Les Belles Lettres pour le développement de la culture classique, was founded by the Association Guillaume Budé
, with the initial goal of publishing the Greek
and Latin
classics. It was headed by the hellenist Paul Mazon (1874-1955) during its early days, with 300 industrialists enamoured with the classics as shareholders to provide the necessary capital. The first volume of the Budé series was published in 1920. More than 800 volumes of classical works have been published, and more are forthcoming. Besides the classical authors, the publishing house also publishes the works of other early authors, including the complete works of Giordano Bruno
