Leonid Michelson is a major Russian businessman, CEO, chairman and major shareholder of the Russian gas company Novatek
.

In 1987 he became the head of the trust "Kuybyshevtruboprovodstroy", which in 1991 became a joint stock company Samara national enterprise "Nova". He became manager of the company, and then general manager of “Novafininvest" in the structure which, among other companies entered "Nova".
His commitment to the sector was duly acknowledged and Mr. Mikhelson was awarded the Znak Pochyota Order(the Order of Honour)
In 1991, "Kuybyshevtruboprovodstroy" was privatized, turned into a joint stock company "Samara national enterprise "Nova ". Michelson led them to October 1994, then moved to position of general director of "Novafininvest" management company, one of the assets of which was the "Nova".
"Novafininvest" no longer engaged in the construction of pipelines and gas production. Michelson managed to convert the old ties of the builder of pipelines in the opportunity to earn their coverage. He began buying shares of association "Purneftegazgeologia" that owned the license for a few locations with large reserves of gas, organized the creation of several new oil and gas enterprises in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area. In the end, with the active assistance of Joseph Levinzon, who moved from his post as administrator "Purneftegazgeologia" for the post of Vice-Governor of the district, was created Novatek, which in 1996 began producing oil and gas on the first of its three main deposits - East Tarkosalinskoye. In 2002 the operation began Yurkharovskoye deposit, in 2004 - Khancheyskoye.
As a result, Michelson stopped at IPO version, and in July 2005 19% of shares of Novatek was posted on the LSE. Investors bought shares worth about $ 1 billion, and Michelson received $ 335 million for its 6,6%. Then there was another deal - the sale of 19,99% of shares to Gazprom.
Now Michelson owns about 30% stake in Novatek
(the second largest producer of natural gas in Russia after Gazprom
), as well as about 75% of the shares of large bank of Samara - JSC "First United Bank ("Pervobank"), which was founded in 2006 by merging the Nova Bank and Andrei Ishchuk’s Samara credit Bank.

Current state of affairs
Immediately after the creation of "Novatek" Michelson began attempts to attract capital investors and to organize partnerships. In the spring of 2002 an agreement was reached with the “Itera” of Igor Makarov to merge oil and gas assets, but soon the company refused the deal without explanation. Then Michelson had planned to sell the blocking stake of NOVATEK to French Total. However, this transaction was not approved by FAS.As a result, Michelson stopped at IPO version, and in July 2005 19% of shares of Novatek was posted on the LSE. Investors bought shares worth about $ 1 billion, and Michelson received $ 335 million for its 6,6%. Then there was another deal - the sale of 19,99% of shares to Gazprom.
