Leonard surprised his family and friends, when in 1920 at age 57, he married Henriette Leiningen, daughter of Major-General William Brown Barwell and Lise, Countess of Leiningen Westerburg, a descendent of the "Alt-Leiningen-Westerburg" branch of the House of Leiningen. Leonard died 8 November 1941 at Frensham
