Lee was born December 1, 1942 in Osaka, Japan and moved to Korea with his family after Korea was liberated from the Japanese; here he grew up in Gyeongsan, Gyeongsangbuk-do. He graduated from the Creative Writing Department at Seorabeol College of Arts and received a graduate degree in Korean Literature from Konguk University in 1967. His writing career began in 1966 when he won an award from a Seoul Newspaper. In 1986 he was awarded the Modern Literature Award.
