Laoshan District

Laoshan District (崂山区) is an administrative division of Qingdao. Its area is 389 km².

Geography

Laoshan District is located in the south of Shandong Peninsula, facing the Yellow Sea in the east and south. It covers 389.34square kilometer with 103.7km coastline.

The district belongs to north temperature zone monsoon climate with moderate temperature all the year. There is neither intense heat in summer nor severe cold in winter. Most of the district is highland with the average altitude of 55m and surface water of 3m. There is abundant high quality ground water. It is easy to prevent flood in rainy season.

The atmosphere quality in district is on second grade, the atmosphere environment is good. Both the surface water and the underground water quality accord with the drinking water standard.

Laoshan District has a population of 191,400. With three national class areas inside, namely the Hi-tech Industry Development Zone, Shilaoren National Tour Resort and Laoshan Scenic Spot, Laoshan is now sparing no effort to build itself into a district featured with "5-center and 4-type". The 5-center refers to the Center of Hi-tech Industrial Development, The Center of Tourism and Holiday Resort, the Center of High Education, the Center of Commerce and Business and the Center of Festivals and Exhibitions, and the 4-type new area means economically-efficient, population-densed, tourism-adaptable and environment-friendly.In 2005, GDP of Laoshan District reached RMB19.698 billion, 17.6% up than last year.

Laoshan District attaches great importance to the development of hi-tech industries, modern tourism and modern services. In terms of hi-tech industry, the focus is laid on the following four leading sectors such as IT, Software, Marine Biological Pharmacy and new Materials. the district boasts 206 hi-tech enterprises including Haier, Lucent Technology and DIC, etc; over 40 scientific research institutes and enterprise R/D centers including FIO, No. 22 Institute Of Electronic Industry Ministry, No. 725 Institute Of China Shipping Industrial Group and Haier Central Research Institute, as well as 3 universities including China Ocean University, Qingdao University and Qingdao S/T University, thus it is the most talent-densed area. In terms of tourism, by exploring and integrating the advantages in its national class resorts, the district has developed and constructed some modern recreational, ecological, seaside sight-seeing tourism facility including the Polar Ocean World and Shilaoren Sightseeing Garden, cultivated some well-know festivals including Qingdao International Beer Festival, Laoshan Tea Festival and Laoshan Tourism Culture Festival, which have become a new typical highlight in terms of modern service. The district is now working up into a new CBD in Qingdao by developing modern banking, insurance, securities and trust business, and modern intellectual services of industry information, technology evaluation, property right transfer and consultation as well.

There are many housing areas and modern multifunctional apartments, office buildings and villas with living, office,

restaurant, recreation, entertainment and holiday functions in various styles.

Culture Facility

There are Qingdao International Beer City, Oceanic Recreation City, Dolphin Exhibition Hall, Sculpture Park, 4-star hotels, seaside holiday villas, International Golf Club, Art Gallery, museum, Haier Science and Technology Gallery, International Exhibition Center and Sports Center, etc.

Every year, Qingdao International Beer Festival, Laoshan Tourism Culture Festival, Laoshan Tea Festival, China International
Electronics and Household Appliances Expoare held here.

Education

There are 65 schools and universities with 2,805 teachers and 28,956 students. Over 400 foreign students from America, Japan, Korea and other regions are studying here. There are famous schools such as Qingdao No.2 Middle School, Overseas Chinese School, Qingdao International School and Qingdao Senior Vocational School.

Health Facilities

The district has complete medical care system with prevention, treatment, care and research in one. There are Qingdao Wanjie Hospital, Maternity and Child Care Center and Disease Control Center in the district.

Brief Introduction of Scenic Spots

The lofty Mt. Laoshan stands on the Yellow Sea in East China. It is very grand, beautiful and steepy. Since ancient times, legend goes
that many celestial beings live here. Now, many Taoists and Buddhists cultivate themselves here. Many VIP and scholars had visited
the beautiful rivulets, steep peaks and beautiful coastal and left many romaunts.
Its advantageous natural scenes and luscious human scenes offer unique situations for its tourism. There are four routes to Mt. Laoshan: the south route, the east route, the north route and sea route. Laoshan scenic area consists of Jufeng Peak Resort, Dengying Resort, Liuqing Resort, Taiqing Scenic Area, Shangqing Scenic Area, Qipanshi Resort, Yangkou Resort, North Jiushui River Resort and Hualou Resort. There are twelve scenic spots such as Mingxia Brightening, Gurgling of Waterfall and Hualou Stone-piling in the scenic area, which are scattered in Mt. Laoshan just like twelve gems.
With the booming tourism, the tourism resources in Mt. Lao grow well. Many scenic spots and historic sites are protected and repaired effectively; ancient trees, forest and biological environment are well managed. Now, Mt. Laoshan Scenic Area has been appraised as State-level Forest Park, National Civilized Scenic Area, Advanced Setup of National Scenic Areas and National Grade AAAA Tour Area.

The Polar Ocean World

A joint venture with Singapore, it is a comprehensive resort including marine science popularization, sea-floor view, recreation and purchase.

The Seaside Sculpture Park

Lying on the Yellow Sea beach in eastern Qingdao, the park covers an area of 8 hectares, scattered with indoors and outdoors sculptures.

Modern Art Center

The first theme park of culture and art in China, it is composed of art creation and exhibition, art experience, and the development of children’s art genius.

Shilaoren Beach

The beach, 600mu in area, is an internationally first-class comprehensive resort, materializing Qingdao's fame as Capital of Sails, and the unique scene of green trees, white waves, blue sea and sky。

The Grand Theater

Standing at seaside in eastern Qingdao, the theater is made up of opera hall, music hall, multifunction hall, training center and exchange center.

Haier S/T Palace

A large and modern exhibition of Haier enterprise culture, together with S/T, culture, tourism and recreation, it shows the history and blueprint of Haier Group, meeting the curiosity of people for future life.

Qingdao International Convention And Exhibition Center(QICC)

QICC is located at Century Square of the Qingdao Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone and enjoys a beautiful view along the
seashore. With an area of 250,000 m2, it currently remains the largest venue for exhibition and convention purposes in Shandong
province. It was put into use in Aril, 2001 and ever since has marked a rapid development phase of Qingdao exhibition and convention economy.

After the 2nd phase, the total floor area will reach 150,000 m2, which includes an exhibition area of 50,000 m2 and a convention area of 10,000 m2.

QICC has established a broad network with both domestic and overseas exhibition agencies and has joined IAEM.
The successful holdings of international exhibitions such as the largest specialized fisheries exposition in Asia "China Fisheries & Seafood Expo", the first international electronic exposition approved by the State Council "China International Consumer Electronics Show", "Qingdao International Fashion Week", and "China International Marine Fair" have become the highlights of QICC. In addition, these successes have greatly promoted the development of exhibition and convention industry in Qingdao as well as the overall economic growth of the city.

International Golf Course

Lying east of Shilaoren torism resort, it covers 1500 mu in area and is an internationally-standard golf course.

Sea View Path

It extends 36.9 km from west to east of Qingdao with total investment of ¥380,000 millions, linking parks, beaches, and site of sailing regatta of 2008 Olympics.
