Leaked photographs of the vehicle were originally published in 2008, and early speculation cited a launch date of around 2008 or 2009.

However as of early 2011, the car has yet to be released. However, AvtoVAZ is known to be moving production of the Fiat 124

-based Lada Classic models (the VAZ-2105/2107) out of the Togliatti plant to the IzhAvto factory - this is rumoured to be in preparation for full scale production of the 2116 to begin.
