History

With the arrival of railroads and highways, La Center lost importance and lapsed into a small village serving the surrounding farming district. La Center was officially incorporated on August 27, 1909. Its population in 1940 was 192. As of the census of 2010, there were 2,800 people, 942 households, and 804 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,883.6 people per square mile (725.7/km²). There were 981 housing units. The racial makeup of the city was 91.3% White, 1.0% African American, 1.9% Asian, 1.5% from other races

, and 3.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.6% of the population. 21.1% were of German, 13.8% Irish, 7.5% English, 6.3% Norwegian and 6.3% American ancestry according to Census 2000.

There were 804 households out of which 42.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.6% were married couples living together. 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16.0% were non-families. 19.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.0 and the average family size was 3.2.

In the city the age distribution of the population shows 30.8% under the age of 18. The median age was 36 years.
