Kvikne was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt
). It was split January 1, 1966, with the Kvikne village (with 664 residents) incorporated into Tynset
municipality in Hedmark
, and Innset
village (with 420 residents) incorporated into Rennebu
municipality in Sør-Trøndelag
. The greatest portion of the land became part of Tynset. In 1970 the farm Garlia with 5 residents was transferred from Tynset to Rennebu.
The famous Norwegian author, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson
was born on the Bjørgan farm in Kvikne.
Vollan gård in Kvikne is the national park center for Forollhogna National Park
